The Ice Bear Project

This December 11th animal sculptor, Mark Coreth, will carve a life-sized ice sculpture of a hunting polar bear in Trafalgar Square, just outside the National Gallery. Over ten days it will melt, leaving a bronze skeleton, a pool of water and a powerful environmental message. Anyone who comes to Trafalgar Square will be able to reach out and touch the Ice Bear. Everyone who does will become sculptors as they shape it - symbolic of how we all have the power to affect our delicate environment.

In the run-up to Christmas this year, Trafalgar Square’s Northern Terrace will play host to a life-sized ice sculpture of a hunting polar bear. Over 10 days the Bear in the Square will melt, leaving a skeleton, a pool of water and a powerful environmental message.

Sculptor, Mark Coreth will finish carving the bear from a huge block of white ice during the morning of Friday 11th December. After that, anyone who visits Trafalgar Square will be able to reach out and touch the melting bear and the skeleton as it emerges.

Thousands of hands will help the natural elements shape this iconic symbol of the Arctic.

This will be a great opportunity for everyone to make a connection with polar bear and their Arctic home. It’s also an experience that will convey the power we humans have to influence the delicate balance of nature.

This is the part of my office that I like the most, even though I always face away from it.
