Owl See You in Your Dreamz by my incredibly talented friend Steve Speir is now hanging in my living room. It’s my first painting. On our last trip to Philadelphia for a freelance project we took a couple days to hang out with the crew in our old neighborhood. Steve had a solo show at Part Time Studios featuring his latest work, a series of paintings based on “My First Worst Nightmare”. Exhilarating! The show looked fantastic. It’s so wonderful to go back after a few months and see everyone working hard, the space not changed much (filled with more work!), but so busy, and obviously doing so well. Makes me so proud!
Which brings me to some things I’ve realized the last few months, after seeing my pals for SXSW here in Austin then spending some QT with them in Philly. My friends are outrageously talented and creative. They all produce beautiful things as diverse as their personalities: paintings, weavings, miniature sculptural worlds, prints, furniture, code, jewelry, food! beer!, photography and film, and music! The music!
I can’t surround myself with these beautiful people all the time since we live so far apart and we’re all constantly moving and expanding, but I can surround myself with beautiful reminders of them with credits to their hard work and creativity. So in Philly I bought my favorite of Steve’s new pieces, a few of Adam and Halli’s last pieces of jewelry and a few of Shawn’s new prints. Coming home to see the beautiful things these beautiful people make every day, and wearing little pieces of them, makes my heart happy.
Love you guys. Philly for life.
